CarQuotes.ca Selling Advice
Selling a used vehicle can be disheartening. Falling new vehicle prices are pushing values for second hand ones down to record lows. That's great news if you are buying, but not so welcome if you need to sell. It's essential that you take advice if you want to sell your vehicle in the most beneficial way. Let our experts help you with these guidelines:

Where to sell...

Classified Ads: Potentially one of the best ways to sell for the best price. However, the glut of used vehicles already out there means you'll need to be realistic and finding the right buyer may involve a lengthy wait. Keep ads short and to the point and don't make extravagant claims. Local papers are the best place to advertise older, everyday models. But if yours is nearly new or a performance model, specialist magazines or even websites may prove a better bet.

Trade-in your vehicle when you buy a new vehicle: A quick and certain way to put money in your pocket. You're likely to raise less money than through a classified sale. However, the convenience and speed of this method may make this your preferred option.

Auction: Another quick way to raise cash. Setting a reserve price (below which the auctioneer will not sell) is worthwhile but if it's set too high, you'll waste time and money. Don't forget the auction may charge an entry fee whether or not your vehicle sells and they may also charge commission on the proceeds.

Factors affecting your vehicle's value...

Condition: A sparkling vehicle with a sweet-smelling interior will sell more readily than a filthy one. If your car is fairly new, having minor dents and chips removed may be worthwhile. But if it's five or more years old, buyers should expect a few blemishes. Don't let potential buyers beat you down over tiny marks on the body because all older vehicles have them.

Service history: Vital if the vehicle is nearly new or of a prestige make. It charts how well the vehicle has been cared for. Full dealer service records matter less if you're selling an ordinary vehicle that's over five years old.

Color: Subjective, although today's fashion accessory is tomorrow's resale disaster. Bright metallic shades are generally worth more than dark solid colors or white.

Optional extras: The sale of more and more vehicles these days depends on a moderate to a high spec which in most cases enhances the resale value. No one wants a Mercedes with a manual gearbox or a Jaguar with cloth seats.

Mileage: Obviously, your vehicle will be worth less if the mileage is higher.

Preparing for the sale...

Sort out the paper work: Make sure there's a valid registration certificate you can show a buyer. If you have previous certificates they will be welcomed because they help to establish that the mileage shown is genuine. A folder containing all previous service bills and receipts will mark you as a careful owner.

Know your vehicle's value:: Use a CarQuotes.ca Used Vehicle Pricing Report to set a fair price based on your vehicle's condition. Be realistic, but do allow a margin for negotiation. Don't let yourself be beaten down by dealers - walk away if their offer is much lower than the guide prices.

Presentation: It may sound obvious, but a $60 professional auto detailer could add hundreds of dollars to the asking price if you are selling your vehicle privately. A dirty exterior and a trunk full of junk will also deter buyers.
