| Overview |
For 2012, changes to the Subaru Outback are in trim. A new Touring Package replaces the Sport Package, and a premium stereo is added to the Limited models.
The Outback comes with a choice of two engines, both horizontally-opposed “boxer” configurations: a 2.5-litre four-cylinder in the 2.5i, and a 3.6-litre six-cylinder in the 3.6R. The 2.5i Convenience and Touring models come with a six-speed manual or optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters, while the 2.5i Convenience PZEV and Limited use the CVT only. The 3.6R uses a five-speed automatic transmission.
All use a full-time all-wheel drive system, but with different configurations. The 2.5i models with manual transmission use a viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential that distributes power 50/50 front to rear. The 2.5i models with CVT use an electronically-controlled multi-plate transfer clutch that distributes power 60/40 in dry conditions, and up to 50/50 on slippery surfaces. The 3.6R uses Variable Torque Distribution that employs an electro-mechanical centre differential that distributes power 45/55 on dry roads, and up to 50/50 on slippery ones.
Features on the 2.5i Convenience include 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, driver-selectable hill holder system, electronic parking brake, splash guards, heated mirrors, automatic headlights, fog lights, raised-profile roof rails with integrated swing-in-place crossbars, privacy glass, CD/MP3/WMA stereo with four speakers, auxiliary input, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, voice-activated Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, keyless entry, rear washer/wiper, driver’s auto-down window, heated cloth seats, ten-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, 60/40 split-folding reclining rear seats, embroidered floor mats and cargo cover.
The 2.5i Convenience PZEV adds PZEV emissions equipment, badge and PZEV-embroidered floor mats.
The 2.5i Touring adds dual-zone automatic climate control, front bumper under-guard, windshield wiper de-icer, power sunroof, iPod/USB media hub, leather-wrapped steering wheel with Bluetooth controls, driver’s auto up/down window, cargo area tray, and six speakers.
The Limited adds leather seats, Pioneer AVIC CD/MP3/WMA/DVD/DiX navigation stereo with detachable face, Bluetooth streaming audio, 350-watt speaker system, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, Sirius satellite radio, woodgrain interior trim, and brushed aluminum front door sills.
The 3.6R builds on the 2.5i Touring and adds twin exhaust.
The 3.6R builds on the 2.5i Limited and adds twin exhaust.
