| Overview |
For 2012, changes to the Subaru Legacy are in trim. The Sport Package is discontinued, replaced with a Touring Package that adds dual-zone automatic climate control, six-speaker system and integrated steering wheel-mounted buttons for the Bluetooth system; the Sport’s satellite radio, auto-dimming mirror with compass and Blueconnect are discontinued. The Limited models add an upscale stereo. The base 3.6R is discontinued, and the model is available only as a Limited.
The Legacy comes with a choice of three engines, all of them horizontal “boxer” configuration: a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder in the 2.5i, 265-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder in the 2.5GT, and a 256-horsepower 3.6-litre six-cylinder in the 3.6R. The 2.5i is also available as a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle), which reduces emissions by as much as 90 per cent compared with a conventional vehicle. The 2.5i uses a six-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters. The 2.5GT uses a six-speed manual transmission exclusively, while the 3.6R models come with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
All come with Subaru’s symmetrical full-time all-wheel drive, with configuration dependent on the model. The 2.5i and 2.5GT models with manual transmission use a viscous coupling limited-slip centre differential to distribute power 50/50 front to rear. The 2.5i with CVT uses an electronically-controlled multi-plate transfer clutch system that runs 60/40 in dry conditions, and 50/50 on slippery surfaces. The 3.6R models use variable torque distribution, which uses an electro-mechanical centre differential that runs 45/55 on dry roads, and 50/50 on slippery ones.
Trim levels are the 2.5i, 2.5i Convenience, 2.5i Convenience PZEV, 2.5i Touring, 2.5i Limited, 3.6R Limited and 2.5GT.
Features on the 2.5i include 16-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, driver-selectable hill holder system, electronic parking brake, heated mirrors, automatic headlamps, CD/MP3/WMA stereo with four speakers and auxiliary input, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, driver’s auto-down window, heated cloth seats, height-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, information display, exterior temperature gauge, overhead console lighting, and 60/40 split-folding rear seats.
The 2.5i Convenience adds 16-inch alloy wheels, ten-way power driver’s seat, stainless steel exhaust tip, and voice-activated Bluetooth connectivity.
The 2.5i Convenience PZEV adds PZEV emissions equipment, rear badge and PZEV-embroidered floor mats.
The 2.5i Touring adds 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, power sunroof, rear spoiler, windshield wiper de-icer, leather-wrapped steering wheel with Bluetooth buttons, fog lights, iPod media hub, and six speakers.
The 2.5i Limited adds Pioneer AVIC CD/MP3/WMA/DVD/DivX navigation stereo with detachable face, Bluetooth streaming audio, 350-watt six-speaker system, Sirius satellite radio, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, woodgrain interior trim, brushed aluminum front door sills, four-way power passenger seat, and perforated leather upholstery.
The 3.6R Limited adds twin exhaust with stainless steel tips.
The 2.5GT adds 18-inch alloy wheels with summer performance tires, functional hood scoop, CD/MP3/WMA stereo with nine Harman/Kardon speakers and 440-watt amplifier, auxiliary input, iPod/USB media hub, navigation system, rearview camera, simulated carbon fibre interior trim, perforated heated leather seats with silver stitching, and aluminum alloy sport pedals.
